Love in a Brussels street

I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit Brussels, Belgium at least twice a year in recent years. I’ve seen many of the primary tourist attractions, but what I enjoy most is wandering through the narrow, cobblestoned streets in the center of the city, where the details of the human and architectural landscape endlessly fascinate me.

One of my favorite elements is a storm drain cover on a side street near the Grand-Place. All of the other drain covers are simple metal grates, but this one is more elaborate and beautiful, depicting a man and a woman in mid-embrace.

How did this grate come to be placed here? Is it merely art or is it an extravagant expression of love? I’m romantic by nature and like to imagine that it is a public proclamation of the eternal love of this couple, a visual invitation to stop for a moment and celebrate the power of that love.

Security

Conscious of his imminent departure for an overseas assignment, a Navy Dad cradles his infant son, ready to do whatever it takes to protect him. Fortunately Dad is not going to a war zone and in a few months his wife and young son will be joining him in that faraway country.

This past weekend I was privileged to attend a baby shower for the newest addition to my family. There was an official photographer for the event and he is the one who staged the first two photos. I shot around him and from different angles and generally tried to stay out of the way. The final shot was unstaged, though, and was one I grabbed while they were simply sitting on the sofa.

I am not used to taking photos of people and certainly not of babies, but I really like the way these turned out. Somehow I am fascinated by the baby’s hands and the different positions in the images—the clutching of the flag in first shot the semi-salute in the second, and the gentle grasp of his Dad’s hand in the final image.

Security? What can make you more secure than to be held in your Dad’s arms?

Ladybug loving

It’s difficult not to feel a bit like a voyeur when you spot a pair of ladybugs mating. They consummate the act in public view and their bold coloration makes them almost impossible to miss. Still, there is just something loveable about ladybugs and I doubt that many readers will find these images objectionable.

Love returns

During a short visit to Green Spring Gardens this past weekend, I was thrilled to see that one of my favorite flowers is starting to bloom, Love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena). I smile at its name and marvel at its delicate beauty.
