Here’s a shot of another one of the colorful butterflies of Huntley Meadows Park. I spotted this Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) there this past Friday morning as it perched in a tree. What was the butterfly doing in the tree? It seemed to me that it was simply resting, though I suppose that it might also have been trying to attract a mate.
From a photography perspective, I really like the way that the background is divided into two separate colors, creating a kind of yin-yang effect.

Wonderful effect with the “two backgrounds” – I agree with your perspective on it! And what a beautiful butterfly.
Thanks. I didn’t really plan to have the background like that–it was a bonus as I tried to get shots from a number of different angles.
Funny how we sometimes don’t see these things till we get home and look at the shot on the computer!
It’s like getting extra little bonuses when reviewing the image on the computer. I’m amazed at the things that I will find in the frame that I never saw because I was so focused on the primary subject.
Lovely, not so far north the butterfly season is over.
We are still “enjoying” the heat of the summer here in Northern Virginia. Personally, I would welcome some cooler weather.
