I’ve finally made my way through all the photos that I took of my recent encounter with a Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) at Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria, Virginia and found some more good ones to post. My dear friend and photography mentor Cindy Dyer helped me to select these and to get them ready for printing.
There is a photo contest at the park and the entry deadline is tomorrow, so we were scrambling to get a fox image ready to submit. There is a limit of four photographs per photographer and I’m pretty sure that the first one below is the fox photo that I will enter, along with photos of a bluebird, an eagle, and a dragonfly. This is the first time I’ve ever printed any of my photos bigger than snapshot size—the submission images will be 11 inches by 14 inches (29 x 36 cm) matted to 16 inches by 20 inches (41 x 51 cm)—and the first time that I have entered a contest.
If you haven’t seen my previous posting with photos of this session with the fox, check out Fox at water’s edge and Fox at water’s edge—part two.

Great photos Mike! 😀
Thanks, A.J. for your kind words.
These are all amazing, Mike! Every single one had a wow impact on me. My favourites are the first one, because of the curve in the fox’s body, and the penultimate one, because of the angle of the fox’s head along the plane of the water and the way it’s eyes bore into me as the viewer. Wonderful!
Good series, Mike. All the best for the contrst, that is exciting!
Thanks, Chris. I’ve heard there is a single judge, so it’s hard to predict how things will go. Whatever the case, it proved to be really beneficial for me to actually get some photos printed–I’m sure I’ll be getting photos printed much more regularly now. Of course it’s even cooler to get published like you. 🙂
I think it would be a thrill to see your work hanging in an exhibition. And I agree with your comment about printing and framing your work, something we don’t do enough!
Astonishing photos!
Thanks so much for your kind words.
Perfect captures of a beautiful animal!
It’s fun getting photos enlarged and these are all worthy. Well done. Good luck with the contest though whatever you think still matters more in the end.
truly wonderful collection, I adore the last two especially
Wonderful photographs.
Gosh, well done Mike.
That has been a great series you have been posting of the fox. Great photos.
Those are all excellent and I would have had a hard time choosing just one. I hope you did well in the contest!
You have done a great job here, Mike, from the initial capture with the camera to the final processing. They certainly look like winners to me!
Awesome shots Mike! The second to the last is a true winner, a perfect combination of light and fox looking at you is fantastic! 🙂
Thanks, Ed.
What a wonderful session! I agree that the first one goes beyond general interest and typical expectations. That’s a superb capture of a strikingly unusual pose. Best of luck with your contest!
Thanks for your encouragement, Gary. I have no idea how the contest will go–there are lots of talented photographers–but I am happy I pushed myself to enter.
What a beautiful animal, great pictures! I hope I get to see a fox in the wild some day.
Thanks. The foxes are out there but are tend to be pretty elusive–I can count on one hand the number of times that I have spotted a fox in the wild.
