On Monday, I watched a family of Canada Geese (Branta canadensis), the parents and five little goslings, as they made their way from a little pond to forage in a field of cattails nearby. It was raining at the time, as you can see in the first photo, where two of the babies are swimming along (there was one parent to the front and one to the rear in the little convoy).
Once they made it to drier land, the little geese vigorously munched on small bits of vegetation. In the second photo, there is a little piece of a plant hanging out of the mouth of the baby goose. When they were in the water, the goslings looked like round balls of fluff, but they look more gangly and awkward on land.
I noticed a couple of geese sitting on what appeared to be nests. If so, I suspect I will be taking more photos of cute little baby geese.

They sure are cute. I guess I’ve never put much thought into what geese eat, so thanks for filling in that gap.
Sweet!! My dog came home the other day with a very muddy tummy! π
That’s the challenge of soggy weather…hard to avoid getting muddy.
Beautiful. Too bad they don’t stay that way.
Only 2? I wonder what happened to the rest of the clutch. Probably a meal for some other animal.
There were actually 5 of the little goslings, but they strung themselves out enough that it was hard to get them into a single shot and still see individual expressions.
I’m AMAZED at the size of the legs/feet on that cute, fluffy little gosling!
It’s always fascinating to see how the proportions of babies are different from those of adults. I recently watched a drawing video in which someone was talking about how disproportionately large the heads of human babies are in comparison to those of adults.
How interesting! Yes, of course π Are you an artist as well as photographer?
Not yet. I have decided that I want to learn to draw and do some watercolor painting. I have purchased a bunch of materials and hope to start playing around with them soon. In the meantime I have been watching a lot of videos on YouTube for inspiration and tips.
How exciting Mike! Just getting the materials together would be very enjoyable. I love art materials and stationery just for their own sake! Have you seen the movie “You’ve Got Mail”? The Tom Hanks character has got to know a young woman on the internet and says that if he knew her address he could send her a ‘bouquet of newly-sharpened pencils’ – I just love that so much !!!
I have seen “You’ve Got Mail,” but it was quite some time ago and I didn’t remember that quotation. Fortunately YouTube came to the rescue. I have never considered myself artistic, so it is a lot of fun to explore in this new area. As with photography, I can see myself being drawn to acquire more “stuff,” I had no idea how many different materials could be used in a simple medium like watercolor (lots of different kinds of papers, paints, and brushes, for example).
Our messages just crossed, I’ve just sent you a message. Thanks again for this chat too Mike! I’m so interested in what you’re doing, and I’m thinking about what possibilities there might be for me too!
