Frost covered the ground early on Tuesday morning when I arrived at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The first creature that I spotted was an Eastern Cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus) foraging in the wintery grass that has not yet turned green. The sunlight was soft and low, making the bunny glow.
It was a wonderfully gentle way to begin a new day.

I love the bunnies! Ours have been very active all winter so I expect we will see lots of baby bunnies this year.
Yay for baby bunnies. There are quite a few hawks and other predators at “my” wildlife refuge, so I don’t see rabbits all that often, but occasionally I will scare up one while walking on the trails. I owned a rabbit for a couple of years, so they are pretty special to me.
From time to time, we see hawks in our back garden. I know our bunny population will decline when they are around. Sad but that’s nature.
Nice Bunny images Mike!
So cute and nice light Mike 🙂
Thanks. The early morning backlighting was a nice bonus and made the bunny seem even cuter.
Aw, bunnies are so cute! Great photos as always. 😊
Thanks. I try to keep my eyes open for more than just birds and bugs. 🙂
Who doesn’t say “Awwww…” when we see a bunny? Sweet takes, Mike.
That has in fact been the most common response, Eliza, to my bunny photos. 🙂
I love the way backlighting illuminates their ears. Nice shots and start to your day, Mike.
This was a wonderful way for me to start my morning, too, Mike. Thanks so much. I espec. like the glow from the sun, and the way the rabbit fur so closely resembles the frozen grass.
Can’t tell you the last time I’ve seen a rabbit around here, and I basically live in the woods. Too many predators I’m thinking!
I live in a townhouse in the suburbs and occasionally see a bunny in the neighborhood, but I suspect its survival is problematic, given that I have seen hawks around and have been told we even have some coyotes.
Yes, same here. Foxes, raptors, and rumors of coyote as well.
me again, an anytime of day bunny rabbit is adorable … i had bunnies when as a child in Hong Kong and they are a ball of love …
I had a rabbit as a pet for several years and they indeed are quite adorable.
