As the days become colder and the landscape turns monochromatic, I am always happy to spot the bright red plumage of a male Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), like this one that I photographed on Monday at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

Nice & Colorful Mike!
The red really stands out against the blue sky — nice!
Beautiful picture of one of my favorite birds! I look forward to hearing them sing again around February.
Love this!
Beautiful photo! Cardinals are such gorgeous birds!
Handsome bird. Well done.
Thanks, Dan.
They certainly punctuate the trees and shrubs this time of year like a teacher’s red pencil mark!
Yikes. I think we all were traumatized by the red pencil marks when we were students. I especially like it when I am lucky enough to photograph a cardinal on a snowy day.
Great picture. I wish we had cardinals. They have a very characteristic shape.
Thanks, Susan. They are definitely distinctive and a welcome sight.
