I spotted this large Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) strutting about at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge this past weekend with about a dozen of his close friends. It was hard to get a group shot, so I focused instead on the largest turkey in the group and captured this image.

Oh, yum, turkey dinner! 😉
I’ve never had wild turkey…I wonder if it has a stronger flavor than the domesticated ones we find in the supermarket.
My son has eaten wild turkey. He said it was more flavorful, but the flesh is tougher than domestic as they wander constantly and fly, so they are more muscled. It is pretty essential to get a bird that is young, the older ones are tough, but might make a good soup.
Good info. When it comes to Wild Turkey, the people I know that have generally consumed the distilled version that comes in a bottle. 🙂
