I will be heading home soon after my brief stay in Vienna, Austria and thought I would post a few last wildlife photos that I took here. These images help reinforce to me the notion that there is always something interesting in nature to photograph, no matter where I happen to be.
The first image is an unidentified species of frog that I encountered at the edge of a pond while wandering about the Donau-Auen National Park. It reminds me of the Southern Leopard Frog that I often see at home in Northern Virginia.
The second image appears to be a Viennese Banded Snail (Cepaea vindobonensis) that I also spotted in the National Park. I thought that it was really cool the way that it had attached itself to the vegetation.
The final image shows what I believe to be a Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) that I saw at the Stadtpark (“city park”) not far from the hotel where I am staying. I always find swans to be beautiful and graceful, even when located in an urban environment.

I loved the Viennese Banded Snail, vaguely reminded me of fine bakery items and I wondered if the things in my mind were Viennese. I tried searching on ‘Viennese Slice’ and found Bavarian Slice that looked like what I imagined in my mind, at https://www.onlycrumbsremain.co.uk/2016/06/bavarian-slice_17.html and I found these ‘Viennese Swirls’ which have the right shape but not the colours! at https://theonlyveganinthevillage.wordpress.com/2008/10/18/viennese-swirls/
Your comment reminds me that I ate way too much during this trip. Viennese food tends to be fried and high in calories and vegetables are a relatively rare part of most meals (as long as you don’t count potatos).
I’d love to visit Vienna! I’d also love to know what work you do that takes you there but I’ve been afraid to ask in case that’s rude. (Feel free to delete this response if that’s the case!)
No problem. I work as a contractor providing computer support to folks working for the government. Several times a year I am asked to support meetings overseas.
Thanks so much Mike. I can well understand your enthusiasm to get out into nature when engaged in that sort of working trip!
Beautiful photos, Mike!
Benjamin will love these, especially the frog. We have enjoyed these posts during your Vienna trip. Thank-you x 2!!
Thanks. I didn’t have huge amounts of time to look for wildlife since I was in Vienna for work, so I was happy to be able to capture images of a variety of creatures.
