Though it is officially called “common,” the bright colors and patterns of this Common Buckeye butterfly (Junonia coenia) make it uncommonly beautiful in my eyes. (I should also note that it is not common for me to spot one—I’ve seen them only a few times this summer.)

Rare here, too. I’ve only ever seen one of them. They are such beautifully colored BFs. I wonder how they got that name?
The source of the name is a mystery to me too–I figured that perhaps they were common in Ohio. Maybe both the tree and the butterfly some resemble the eye of a buck. Who knows?
Lovely image – the yellow flowers make it especially striking .. I rarely see them here, so, it’s a treat for me too!

Thanks. I was thrilled with the yellow flowers too, which provided the background the same day for a Monarch Butterfly as well.
That’s one I’ve never seen, Nice shot!
I don’t think I’ve seen one of these since student days in Ohio. So nice to see one again. And a hearty hurrah for the background it chose to pose for you!
I love a cooperative subject! When I am out and about with my camera, I try to remain ready–there are so many cool subjects that seem to cross my path.
Butterflies are one of the real treasures in our world, you really captured the unique beauty of your subject.
