Butterflies in November? I didn’t really expect to see any, so it was a pleasant surprise when I came upon this Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia) on Monday at my local marsh. The butterfly is beat-up and bedraggled, but its beauty beams brightly—uncommon beauty at an unexpected time.

The butterfly has beautiful autumnal colours too. What a delight to see one at this time of year.
Thanks. At other times of the year it seems like the blue color is more pronounced, but you are absolutely right that the more muted colors, with the shades of brown and orange, match the autumn palette–I hadn’t made that association before.
It’s amazing that you’re still seeing butterflies in November. It’s a beauty, even if its wings are a little tattered.
It is always a surprise to see butterflies so late. Yesterday I saw one in the garden along with foraging bees and it was pretty cold outside for them.
We have had some freaky weather causing havoc with nature. seems this is global thing then.
His wings look a bit beaten, maybe he is on his final hurrah.
Lovely shot. It’s been a weird year.
Nice to see a buckeye! Here in southern Illinois we have 3 species of butterflies that overwinter as adults: comma, question mark and mourning cloak. They feed at sap flows and will fly occasionally on warm sunny days.
Very strange year indeed! I was in Stockholm, Sweden a few days ago and I saw a dragonfly?!
Beautiful 🙂 We’ve had a really warm Autumn in the UK and many butterflies have been spotted later than normal!
There were butterflies along the causeway I walked last week but I wasn’t quick enough to get a photo.
As long as I continue to see butterflies, I defiantly refuse to accept that summer is gone!
