Green Herons (Butorides virescens) are once again hanging out at my local marshland park. Unlike Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias), which fish while wading in the water, these smaller herons usually wait at water’s edge or on vegetation, which normally makes them tough to spot. This Green Heron, though, decided to perch on a log in plain view, which allowed to take this rather formal looking portrait shot.

He does look like he’s posing for you. Great shot.
This is another one that I see only the tail feathers of. Nice shot. It has a soft, misty look.
I like how this heron and the one in the photo you posted the other day sort of “match” the colors of the rock or tree bark they are standing on. I don’t know if that just occurred naturally by accident or if you made it happen deliberately, but either way, I like it!
I didn’t have much choice for the backgrounds, but it is interesting that both of the little herons seems to fit in well with their surroundings.
This is such a cute heron, I love the expression on his face. 😀 Nice capture, Mike, another bird we don’t have over here!
You do have blue herons though, don’t you?
No we only have grey (very common) and white (less common) herons! The blue heron is named “American heron” here 🙂
So lovely….
