The weather has gotten warmer, but I was still a bit surprised when I saw my first dragonfly of the year yesterday at Huntley Meadows Park, my local marsh. I think that it is a female Common Green Darner dragonfly (Anax junius), one of the species that migrates north after spending the winter in warmer places. This is the only dragonfly that I saw yesterday and I was able to squeeze off a couple of shots before it disappeared. I’m hoping that it won’t be long before I see more dragonflies and butterflies, some of my favorite photographic subjects.

Yay, first dragonfly!! I haven’t seen seen any yet this year. I’m happy you got Spring too now 🙂
I think our nights might still be to cool for them here, but it shouldn’t be much longer.
You’ll be a happy man then Mike! 😀
Thanks. You know me too well. Birds are great, but there is something even more special about dragonflies.
I still haven’t figured out what that beastie I saw last year was. A Troll-fly maybe!
Alright! About time spring showed up around there, and surely those butterflies will start showing up as soon as it just gets warm and there’s a little sun.
What a welcome sight! While looking at the new daffodil shoots today, I saw my first spider in last year’s leaves–and, of course, our box elder bugs have made their unwelcome appearance. Congrats on your first dragonfly!
Excellent shot! I see lots of male Green Darners, but I don’t think I have ever seen the females close up, at least not close enough to see all the color in their thorax and abdomen.
