Flowers are slowing giving up their colors and fewer insects are flying as we move deeper into fall. It lifts my spirits to see the survivors, like this Cabbage White butterfly (Pieris rapae) that I spotted during a trip to Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge at the end of September. The Cabbage White may appear to be completely monochromatic, but if you double-click on the image, you can get a look at its beautiful speckled green eyes.

I like the contrast in this photo, Mike.
Thanks, Dan. It is not a really remarkable image, but more of a pleasant one. The contrast in color between the butterfly and the flowers that you noted is a large part of what makes me like this shot.
Nice capture.
Very nice Mike! Soon we will have to look for other photo subjects!
Thanks, Reed. I will end up switching to mostly birds, though in this kind of shoulder season, I am looking equally for birds and insects (plus some other interesting subjects like snakes, spiders, and frogs).
Nice! I like the way that the older passe blooms give a nod to autumn.
Wow! Amazing
Needs that furry little body for these cold mornings! These are about all I am seeing now in Ohio. Though I did see a monarch as I went down the highway last week. Really late sighting on that monarch.
It must have been nice to see that Monarch, Molly. We’ve had some pretty cold mornings too, although I don’t think that we have had frost yet.
A real survivor, I was surpriced by the green eyes.
That’s a beautiful look not only at the eyes but the nice detail you captured of the scales and spots. If it was to be your last butterfly of the year it’s a beaut, Mike.
That contrast of colour is just what nature is all about. Stunning shot as always Michael 👏👏
