How do you grow a lot of plants in a small space? My amazingly creative friend, neighbor, and photography mentor Cindy Dyer decided to take advantage of vertical space and created this incredible wall of flowers and plants on the interior portion of the fence that encloses her back yard. Wow!
I do not know all of the details about how she set it up, but I think that the material, which Cindy describes as “felt-like,” has sewn-in pouches into which she inserted all of the plants and flowers. She mentioned to me that she had mixed some water-storing crystals in with the potting soil to reduce water stress and plans to water the wall regularly.

Vertical growth is the future for many places. Good for you.
Thanks. I live in a townhouse neighborhood and the yards are pretty small, so this is one way to use the available space effectively.
First time I saw a wall garden it took up an entire front wall of the National Gallery in London and reproduced of Van Gogh painting. Big difference between a wall garden and a walled garden.
That must have been an impressive sight, Michael. Van Gogh is one of my favorite painters and I love his bold use of colors. I must confess, though, that Monet is probably my absolutely favorite.
I like them both, but I’m more Monet man myself.
That’s pretty cool. I’ve seen this done in NYC along with other urban areas. It’s a great idea!
We are definitely in the suburbs, but have tiny yards. I don’t have much growing in my year, but am fortunate to have a friend, who is also a photographer, that has an awesome garden.
It’s a wonderful way to add many plants for small spaces
Nicely done and with a pleasing variety of plants .. great way to dress up a small space!
I’ll gladly second your wow. Great job, Cindy!
I love ‘living walls’ – a great concept! This one is lovely…I hope you do another post in a month or two when it all fills in.
I’ll try to take another shot in a month or so, assuming that the summer heat does not take its toll on the plants.
That’s really clever.
Gorgeous, Mike! I love it! Does she have a blog where she talked about how she did it? Lovely and cheerful!

You can see a lot of her flower shots on her blog and I think she has some info on the garden itself on her blog. cindydyer.wordpress.com She loves to talk about her garden, so I know she would be happy to answer any questions that you might have.
Why, thank you, Mike!
Beautiful idea for those of us with very small yards. Thanks for the post.
Thanks, Geri. My neighbor Cindy Dyer is a photographer and graphic designer and is the most creative person I know. She is the one that decided to create this wall because she had seen it somewhere else. It is amazing and many of the plants have grown quite a bit since I did that initial posting.
