Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) were quite active yesterday at Huntley Meadows Park, including one that was investigating tree cavities. I am not sure if the bluebird was checking out potential nesting spots for next year or was merely searching for insects. Whatever the case, it was definitely cool when the bird climbed inside the cavity and poked its head out. I was particularly happy that the sun was shining brightly, which made the bluebirds’ brilliant blue really pop.

So cute, poking out of the tree.
Yeah, it was a real treat when the bluebird poked its head into the tree cavity and then climbed in. I waited and waited, knowing that eventually it had to come out and suspected that it would initially poke its head out before exiting completely.
“I waited and waited…” – and that’s how you get amazing photos.
Oh no, I’ve revealed my secret. Seriously, though, I do seem blessed with an unusual amount of patience and persistence and that helps me to get some shots of some pretty amazing moments.
I had to comment, Mike. I hear so many people say: (so and so) “was at the right place at the right time” in a way that dismisses the real talent of good photographers.
Love these birds! You captured it perfectly
Mike, the photo on the bottom is fantastic. How long a lens did you shoot that with? The lighting is perfect.
Thanks, Rob. I was shooting with my Tamron 150-600mm lens, As I recall, it was probably at or near the 600mm end of the zoom (on my crop-sensor Canon 50D). The lighting indeed was amazing and it made the blue of the bluebird’s body amazingly beautiful.
