It’s showtime in the Washington D.C. area—the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. There is no denying their beauty, but somehow I am drawn even more to the simple beauty of modest flowers like this snowdrop (genus Galanthus) that I observed this past Friday. There was a light drizzle most of the day, which coated the unopened petals with beautiful crystal-like globes.
Simple beauty—I find it to be irresistible.

I love snowdrops, probably because they were always an early indicator that spring was in its way. I don’t recall seeing a single one since we moved to America though so I’m glad to know they are around.
They are definitely here and I have photographed them at times in late winter. This might be a later bloomer. It was growing in the shadow of some bushes at a local garden that I visited this past Friday.
You’re lucky to have them. I never see them here, and I don’t know why.
Beautiful photo thank you
Gorgeous photo, Mike. Of all of your photos, this has to be my favorite thus far!!
Thanks, Judy. In many ways this photo takes me back to my roots. My mentor specializes in macro shots of flowers and when she started teaching me that’s what I focused on. The image I posted is uncropped–that was the way I composed in the viewfinder, though I did have to do some postprocessing because I shoot in RAW. Each spring I rediscover the joy of shooting with my macro lenses after a winter of shooting mostly with telephoto lenses.
Very delicate!
