Fall foliage is great at this time of the year, but I am also finding beautiful colors as I walk deeper into the woods. I can’t identify these different fungi, but that doesn’t keep me from enjoying their beauty. I especially enjoy the rainbow shapes in the shades of autumn, with such a wide range of oranges and browns.

I think the top two might be turkey tails (Trametes versicolor). They are very colorful, whatever they are.
Thanks, Allen. I figured you’d be able to identify some of the them immediately (and they actually look like the turkey tails that we used to make in elementary school around Thanksgiving time). I’m trying to be a bit more attentive as I’m walking around and at this time of the year there seem to be a lot of fungi growing on the fallen trees in particular.
Yes, this is one of the best time of year to find fungi of all kinds.
The nice thing about photographing fungi is they don’t move! 🙂
It is definitely nice to have an immobile subject, though the limited light posed its own challenges.
As you know, I share your fondness for fungi. The turkey tails are nearly always worth a really close look, but I’m particularly attracted to the wonderful ring on the cut surface of the log. I’d love to see you turn your macro lens on some of these for a few really detailed studies of the structure they’ve developed. Are they still in good enough shape?
I think that these are now past their prime, but I will keep an eye out for others and see if I can get some closeups. This seems to be the season for fungi of all sorts (and we had some rain recently).
It’s a great time of year for fungi hunting and there are some lovely ones out there.
