Although I never saw the Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) enter the nesting box, she poked her head inside of it and was checking it out as a prospective home.

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful moment…your photo is amazing.
Thanks, Charlie.
That’s a great shot. I like the dovetailing on the box. Someone with talent spent a lot of time making it.
Thanks. I suspect that you might notice that detail. I did, in fact, set up my tripod to try to capture that detail of the nesting box.
Another good shot, Mike. I can’t quite decide, though, if the dove-tail joints in the nesting box are species-appropriate…
What would swallowtail joints look like?
Some mysteries are better left unsolved…
Forked. (in answer to your question to kritikarts).
That looks like a nice new clean box and probably still has the required entrance hole size that hasn’t been modified by some other animal. Nice portrait.
Thanks. I am not sure if the box is new, but it sure is in good condition. There is frequently one tree swallow perched on the top of the pole to which the box is attached and he was there at the time the second one was checking out the entrance.
