I was surprised and delighted to spot this pair of Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) perched on a floating log in the waters off of Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge last Thursday. As I draw closer to nesting season, I have been seeing more eagles in couples. Normally, of course, I see them in the trees, but I have gotten used to scanning the water as well—I never know where I might see a perched eagle.

What a wonderful shot! I’m just trying to imagine how they both landed there without knocking someone off!
Thanks. The log was actually quite a bit longer than it appears in this shot. The shoreline has a lot of vegetation, so I get a view of the water only some of the time. From a different angle, I was able to see more of the log, but did not have as good a view of the eagles. Even so, eagles seem able to do some precise landing–I have watched an eagle land in a nest where another eagle was already present. 🙂
That’s a cool photo, Mike.
Thanks, Dan. Even though I never grow tired of photographing eagles, I have to admit that it is really cool to capture them in a different environment. 🙂
Love this!
Thanks.
👍👍, you just never know. Nice catch.
Thanks, Ted.
Great shot, Mike.
Thanks, Chris. It seems to me that you are more likely to see birds perched on floating things than I am. 🙂
Seriously treasures in plain sight!!
Amen. There is so much going on that we mostly miss out on, because we are not paying attention. 🙂
Very nice Mike! Always fun to photograph Bald Eagles!
