I love all kinds of Christmas songs whether they be traditional carols, secular songs, or contemporary hits. One of my favorites is Winter Wonderland, though I must confess that it sometimes leaves me confused. The second verse says, “Gone away is the bluebird, here to stay is a new bird. He sings a love song as we go along, walking in a winter wonderland.” The bluebirds have not in fact gone away—I saw Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) multiple times this past Tuesday at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
I love these cheerful, colorful little birds and hope that they are here to stay as I walk about in my own winter wonderland.

Love that song too! And bluebirds! (They are currently in my yard!) Merry Christmas, Mike! ❤️💚💙
Merry Christmas Mike and let the bluebirds sing their song in your garden 😉
Thanks, Merry Christmas to you.
Merry Christmas Mike.
I love that you have a bluebird in your wonderland! Enjoy the day, and all the walks to come.
What a gorgeous little bird and another one added to my list for a poem as it looks like the bluebird has a fair amount of myth around it.
Wow. It seems like there is a myth for almost all birds or at least some cultural associations. We both have never ending sources for inspiration. 🙂
Indeed there is. It’s also the same with flowers and trees and of course dragonflies.
Beautiful images of such a charming bird. Happy Holidays!
Thanks, Laura. Hope you have a wonderful day with your whole family.
I rarely see them here in my area, Mike, but ten or so miles west, I see them more often. Nice song as well! 👍🏻✌🏻
For me they are always bluebirds of happiness–they inevitably put a smile on my face.
Such pretty birds, love that second shot especially. When I was young, bluebirds would migrate south, like robins did. But in the 70s, we started seeing overwintering bluebirds and in the 90s, robins. One theory is warmer winters, the other that there are now more fruit trees/bushes like the invasive autumn olive, multiflora rose, honeysuckle and bittersweet for them to eat. For the past month, I’ve had bluebirds visiting my winterberry and hollies. I love seeing them and they have the sweetest call.
Yes, and what would that new bird be? Nonsensical lyrics, but I’ve always liked that song, too. Wishing you a Merry Christmas, Mike!
It is always dangerous to take song lyrics seriously. Hope your Christmas was merry, Ellen, as the day winds down.
Nice Bluebird images Mike!
Wow! That first image is such an usual angle! Love it!
I love trying to capture familiar subjects in unusual ways, including from strange angles.
