There were quite a few grasshoppers yesterday at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge and this one cooperated for me by posing momentarily. Initially the grasshopper hung upside down as shown in the first image, but eventually it climbed around on the stalk of vegetation and assumed a more upright pose.
I couldn’t help but notice that the background of the two shots seems really different. I think this was caused by the fact that I shot them from very different angles, even though I remained more or less in the same spot.

Mike, I hardly ever go over to HMP. There seem to be large groups of photographers there most of the time and I much prefer to be alone with my subjects. 🙂
Great shot. There are so many grasshoppers around Winnipeg this year and out at my Dad’s in the country. They have been up on my fourth floor balcony. When you walk in Dad’s yard they are everywhere, bumping into your legs and into the car when you open the door.
My grandson saw one Saturday and was amazed to see it fly! Oh the wonders of childhood and the adults who care to look! Thanks for caring to look! You help us see.
I too am amazed at how far grasshoppers can fly–I guess I am still a kid at heart, at least when it comes to childlike curiosity.
