Because of our recent snow and cold weather, I was a little shocked on Wednesday to spot an Eastern Comma butterfly (Polygonia comma) at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This butterfly is a real beauty, but I fear that is may well be my last butterfly of the season.
Earlier in the autumn, this butterflies were a perfect match for the foliage. Now, however, most of the leaves have fallen and are dried up, which makes this butterfly’s muted tones stand out as bright and vibrant.

Super capture Mike, spring can’t come soon enough. I saw a few dragonflies at the weekend possibly also the last.
I think we saw our last one last month, Mike. It’s 6° here this morning.
BEAUTIFUL PHOTO Mike!
Thanks, Diann.
Lovely butterfly. Looks like it was posing just for you!
Nice Mike! A week ago we were still seeing a few dragonflies here. Just seemed a little strange!
Good to hear that a few dragonflies were still about. The day I photographed the butterfly I saw a single Autumn Meadowhawk dragonfly too, but didn’t manage to get a shot of it.
Gorgeous! Ours have all gone. Only flies remain 😦
Such an interesting contrast now that it is late fall. I’ve never seen this butterfly before, but I am really struck by the unique (at least to me) sort of silvery ‘outline’ around its wings.
Do you ever submit your photos to BAMONA https://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/about? I’ve only learned about this wonderful site recently.
