On Friday I was delighted to capture this image of one of my favorite damselflies, the beautifully colored Variable Dancer (Argia fumipennis), while exploring Jackson Miles Abbott Wetland Refuge. The red and yellow colors of the vegetation are vaguely autumn-like, a reminder that the clock is ticking for the end of the dragonfly/damselfly season this year. If only I could slow down the passage of time.

Great picture! So many times that I would love to slow down time, let me know if you find a way! 🙂
That’s a smart damsel.
Beautiful photo Mike that REALLY appeals to me! Such complementary colours and the bare midrib of the leaf makes such a graceful arc! Perhaps this appeals to a “dancer” 🙂
Thanks, Liz. I was really struck by the composition and colors of the image. It’s generally one of my top goals to try to isolate my subjects, that is tough with ones like this. It worked out wonderfully this time and I resisted the temptation to crop closer so that I could show off the arc you mentioned.
Mike, would you mind if I profile this image in a post along with a wonderful hoverfly image that Pete Hillman has just posted. I think both images are outstanding!
Feel free to do so, Liz. I enjoy Pete’s photos immensely–he and I have similar approaches in our photography.
