Finding birds is tough when the leaves are on the trees, but I did manage to spot this cool-looking one here in Vienna, Austria while visiting the Donau-Auen National Park. If this bird had remained quiet, there is no way that I would have been able to find it, but fortunately for me it was singing loudly.
I did a quick internet search, but so far I have not yet been able to identify it. I’d welcome identification assistance, particularly from someone with experience with European birds.
UPDATE: Thanks to the assistance of a number of viewers, I have been able to identify this bird as a Great Tit (Parus major), a widespread and common species throughout Europe, the Middle East, Central and Northern Asia, and parts of North Africa.
How exciting! What did you think of its singing, did it have a pretty tune to match its pretty plumage?
That looks like a Great Tit to me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_tit
I think that you are right. I came to the same conclusion after looking through a lot of photos. Like most guys, I try not to snicker when I relate the name of the bird to others. 🙂
Great shot, Mike. He blends in remarkably well. I’m surprised you were able to find him.
Hi Mike it’s a Great Tit (Parus major), a common European bird, I have one nesting in a box a few feet from my conservatory window.
It’s a Great Tit. It’s a minor miracle that I was able to identify a bird for you when it’s normally you informing me about flora and fauna.
Here in Vienna, Austria, I am at a loss to identify birds and insects that I manage to spot. Thanks for the help, Laura.
I am honestly not that great at identifying UK and European birds so I just happened to luck out that Tits are very familiar to me as they visited my garden daily.
Benjamin loves how the bird is “hiding in the leaves and singing.” When I enlarged the photo he was delighted by “the fluffy yellow feathers.” We are off to find out more about Great Tits. Thank-you, Mr. Mike.
Great shot, lovely bird! I would love to go to Austria someday! 🙂
