Bluebirds never fail to make me feel happy—there is just something really positive about their attitude and their colors.
These Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) made it a little easier for me to capture their images by perching on the tip of branches this past Saturday at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

Gorgeous shots, Mike, and smashing composition.
Thanks so much. I was absolutely thrilled when the bluebirds rose up out of the underbrush and gave me some unobstructed views.
Not a species we get down here so it’s always nice to see feathered friends from around the globe.
When I first started posting, I didn’t really think much about the fact that the subjects that I see all the time and take for granted are rare and exotic for other locations. It is so cool to see birds, insects, and animals from other parts of the world in the postings of others, which enhances my desire to travel to those places and see them with my own eyes.
Beautiful captures!
I told Benjamin that these are Bluebirds, but he says “they are or-nange too.” That makes them special! Thank-you x 2!!
Terrific photos, Mike, and how delightful to see the bluebirds in winter. Like that first one with the dazzle of turquoise.
One of my favorite birds.
So amazing that they are so tiny and skillful! Great photos. ❤️
Thanks, John. I tend to be pretty patient and persistent, which helps me a lot in getting some shots of little birds. Luck, though, also plays a huge role and a cooperative subject is nice too.
Great images. That first one is especially charming. The background is perfect for really focusing the eye on the detail of the bird.
