I’m always happy to see a black and yellow garden spider (Argiope aurantia). I love its colorful patterns and its intricate web (and apologies to readers who are totally creeped out by spiders). I spotted this beauty this past weekend in a patch of goldenrod at Jackson Miles Abbott Wetlands Refuge.

Wow, Mike – great shot and what a vibrant background!
Thanks, Chris. Most of the times that I have photographed a spider like this the background was cluttered and not very interesting. This time I was able to frame the shot so that I had the patches of bright yellow in an effort to have a cheery portrait of a spider.
Ants for breakfast? Excellent shot. 🙂
Thanks, Ed.
Gorgeous photograph, the spider really stands out on that background!
The yellows really complement each other beautifully. You also got a great shot of the zig-zag stabilimentum.
What beautiful colors. You did a great job isolating the spider against the nicely blurred background.
