It’s hard to imagine an odder couple than this dragonfly and this turtle, sunbathing together on a log in the beaver pond. What do they see in each other? How do they communicate? Love seems to find a way to overcome obstacles like these.
One thing is clear—they are happy together, sharing this special moment in the warmth of the sun. If you don’t believe me, check out the smile on the turtle’s face.

No one would ever paint a picture like your photo – it would be too unreal!
Indeed. Life is often stranger than fiction.
That’s a great point.
Excellent shot, although I’m imagining the turtle thinking “I wish that thing was closer to my mouth.”
Probably right, if the butterfly was even aware the dragonfly was there.
Odd indeed. Great capture.
Reblogged this on like an apple.
There are moments when the world is just perfect…Thank you for sharing one of those moments.
I don’t know why but suddenly I’m singing… “ebony and ivory, live together in perfect harmony…” This is one of those perfect moments! Glad you were there with your camera to share it with all of us!
I was amazed when I saw this unusual sight and am happy that I could capture it (and I really like that song). There is something both cute and touching about the juxtaposition of the delicate dragonfly and the hard-shelled turtle.
Brilliant shot! How did you get the turtle to smile?
I think that the turtle instinctively smiled when he sensed the camera pointed in his direction. He also raised his head a little so his neck did not look too thick.
🙂
Great shot and not without a sense of humour 🙂
This is excellent-a once in a lifetime shot!
Thanks. It seemed like all the creatures were enjoying the sunshine and when the dragonfly landed on the turtle, I knew I had to get a shot. I was surprised (and pleased) that it turned out as well as it did, since I was a pretty good distance away and was using a relatively short telephoto lens (180mm).
I never really imagined turtles could smile, but this one definitely is. Great shot, Mike.
Thanks, Sue. The smile, in fact, helped to give me the idea for my story line.
Made me look twice. Or thrice.
Definitely an unusual situation.
What a cool shot
Definitely a fun experience. I am not even sure that the turtle knew there was a dragonfly perched on its shell.
Isnt it amazing that with our cameras, precious fleeting moments in nature like this can be captured and shared !
Such a wonderful shot — it does just ooze contentment, doesn’t it?
Definitely an idyllic scene. On a beautiful day, all were at peace with one another.
