A common bird in a simple setting—that is all of the prompting that I need to capture an image. Nature photography for does not require exotic subjects or locations.
This past Saturday I spotted this Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) perched in a young tree. The position did not look very comfortable, so I suspected the bird would not stay in it for long. I focused quickly and was really happy with the result—a nice little portrait with a very limited palette of subdued colors.

Common bird, simple setting, beautiful photo.
That’s the formula, Dan, and it is amazing how often it works. 🙂
Beautiful, Mike!

Thanks, Mitzy.
I love the colours and tones in this photo. The warm colours in the cold light perfectly capture this time of year and mirror the plumage of the bird. I also love the rotund shape of the bird among those lines formed by the branches. Really lovely photo.
Striking!
Thanks, Molly.
This bird might not be colorful but we had one in the yard one summer and the songs it sang were so beautiful. I’ve hoped every year since that it would return but it never has.
I am not sure if it is always the case, but I have the impression that mockingbirds sing more quietly or maybe less often during the colder months.
That could be.
Nice mockingbird image Mike!
A delightfully peaceful and serene moment, just what so many of us need these days.
Amen to that, Gary.
