Although the daytime temperatures keep dropping, turtles still come out to bask on sunny days. I spotted this beautiful turtle, which I believe is a Red-eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans), last Friday at the same suburban pond where I saw the Ring-necked Ducks and Canada Geese that I featured in previous postings. The subject and composition of this image are fairly ordinary, but the beautiful interplay of the light and shadows help to make the image stand out.

Here I often see turtles sunbathing on the dead tree trunks on the canals of the old fortresses of Antwerp. Enjoy your weeked Mike 😉
Thanks so much. I guess turtles are pretty much the same in their behavior no matter where they are found. Have a wonderful weekend too.
Lucky you to still be seeing turtles, Mike. Ours are in their deep muddy slumber and I don’t expect to see one until April at the soonest.
We are still having days in which the high temperatures get up to about 60, so some turtles are still around.
Always fun to photograph turtles! Nice image Mike!
Nice photograph, MIke.
I like the similarity in texture of the turtle’s leg and the log.
Thanks, Wally. I too noticed the texture of the turtle’s leg, which was emphasized a bit by the angle of the light.
I love when they walk up the logs in the sun.
It’s really well-named–that is an elegant visage.
It is so warm I still see migrating warblers and warm weather things.
I still see a few butterflies, but I think that he migrating warblers have passed through. We still have yellow-rumped warblers around, but they stay here for quite a while.
They have mostly gone but there seems to be more vagrant late migrators than usual.
Guess it is not quite time to dig into the mud!
