Most of the time I try to fill the frame of my camera with my wildlife subjects, but sometimes it’s nice when they are part of a larger landscape, like this shot of a Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) in the rain from last Friday.

Stunning photograph. A great reminder to all to step back once and a while.
I hope to see them here soon. It’s still a little cool, I think.
Love the contrasting striations on the heron, and the logs. M 🙂
Wonderfully composed – nice decision to get ‘the big picture’!
Thanks. The heron was a good distance away, so this was the only kind of shot that I could take. It was mostly a question of taking a shot or not taking a shot. I usually err on the side of taking a lot of shots, never knowing for sure when I will get an unexpectedly pleasing result.
Always a good way to go 😉 … Sometimes the surprises you see later on the computer can be the best captures.
I completely agree with including the broader landscape at times. I keep having to remind myself about that.
