I saw a flash of blue in the distance and I smiled, for I knew it was an Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis). Bluebirds have that effect on me. Why?
I suppose that I can blame the Wizard of Oz, a movie that I watched repeatedly during my childhood. Who could forget Dorothy singing of happy little bluebirds flying beyond the rainbow?
“Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can’t I?
If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can’t I?”

Great shot!
This is my favorite bird but I’ve only seen one once.
I am pretty sure this is a female bluebird. The female is not as blue as the male, but is just as pretty.
Seems early for them to be around, but maybe they haven’t heard about the great polar vortex — or maybe your area escaped that this winter?
I think that we are supposed to have them year round, though I don’t see them that often. For some reason, most of the ones I see are females–I am hoping to photograph a brilliant male soon.
