Dressed up in the cold

Have you ever seen a bird that looked like it was wearing a costume? When I caught sight of this female Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) in the cattails last week, it looked to me like she had donned a large head scarf and an additional coat of feathers as protection from the cold.

My goodness you assembled quite the collection of wildlife since I checked out of blogging for a bit. I found an otter, fox, eagle and other wonderful creatures wandering around your blog! You have had an excellent run. Well done.

  Thanks, Lyle. I had a one week streak of mammals that is unlikely to be repeated any time soon, but there are a fair number of birds still to be photographed–I want an owl shot in 2014. I hope that you have been enjoying your break from blogging. It seems like a good idea to re-energize the batteries from time to time. Best wishes for a wonderful 2014.

Looks to me like she’s trying out the costume she’s planning to wear for the Mardi Gras. You’ve taken your time with the composition, Mike, and it shows.
