Walking along the boardwalk at my local marsh, I encountered this fairly large, hairy red spider in a web almost at eye level.
It was a little disconcerting to look a spider in the eye (eyes) at such close range, but it did allow me to get a pretty detailed shot at close range against an uncluttered background. I’ve been searching around on the internet, attempting to identify the spider but so far have not had any success. Can anyone identify this cool-looking spider?

Whoa, I would not want to walk into that.
you find such..hmmm..I can’t think of the words Mike…but you seem to find and photograph ’em. good shot!
Thanks. I try to shoot what I see and my ability to pick things out seems to be improving. It would be nice to travel to exotic locations, but for now I am pretty content to shoot in my local area.
I think Virginia is pretty exotic.
Impressive shot especially with that background.
I’ve never seen a red spider. Other than for the color it seems to resemble a fishing spider that I saw last week. That was a big one.
This one was a reddish orange and seemed to be smaller that the fishing spiders that I have seen. It was a little hard to tell exactly how big this one was, because of the way that its legs were mostly bunched together. Fishing spiders always seem to have their legs completely extended, which makes them look even bigger.
Eeeeww!! Great shot, Mike, but … eeeeuww! *full body shiver* This is the scariest looking one you posted so far. And what is it doing? Stretching? Brrr!
Not something I would want to walk into..:-)
Great shot..

I’m trying to figure out the same thing! Was at the park with my daughter and my eye caught a glance at this weird looking spider.
I like spiders very much! Sorry this one didn’t stretch out to show his limbs, but the shot is very interesting as is.
I too enjoy watching spiders and regret that the weather has gotten so cold that they are no longer around.
