Punk rocker heron

A blue heron with attitude? The pose, facial expression, and hair style of this Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) at Huntley Meadows Park, my local marsh, remind me of a punk rocker. Do you think he has tattoos and body piercings too?

That’s funny. Even though their heads are almost always wet you don’t see many of them looking like this.

  Thanks. I think the heron had just shaken himself after a bit of grooming and everything was fluffed up a little. It was a little unusual too to catch him with the leg lifted in a position like that.

I Think he might be in a gang.
Actually, it makes me laugh because my old elementary school had a heron for it’s mascot. This picture would have instilled more fear into our opponents than the one we used!!!

  Around here, there is a university that has a turtle as a mascot and has a slogan that says, “Fear the turtle.” It’s almost as difficult to fear a heron as a turtle.

  Thanks, Sue. The “Mohawk” look was only there for a short time and I was glad that I could capture it. This is definitely one of my favorite shots.
