Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) are one of my favorite birds, in part because they are with us the entire year. Even during the snowy days of winter, I would occasionally see one of them.
Now that spring is here, there are many more birds at Huntley Meadows Park, but I am always happy to see one of the faithful Great Blue Herons, like this one that flew by me yesterday morning.

Nice shot! I haven’t seen any herons here yet this year and that’s kind of a surprise since our winter was so mild. Spring peepers and red winged blackbirds are certainly letting their presence be known!
We too are treated to the choruses of the spring peepers and the red-winged blackbirds. There seem to be at least several Great Blue Herons active in my favorite park.
Great shot!
Thanks, Victor.
Wonderful shot.
Thanks, Lyle. I’m always looking for opportunities to get in-flight shots and a Great Blue Heron is a pretty big, slow-moving target. Still, it’s tough to get good wing positions and sharp focus, especially when there is a cluttered background.
