I don’t know if this male Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) qualifies as an “angry bird,” but he sure did not seem happy to see me this morning at Huntley Meadows Park.
Maybe he was cold and hungry or got off on the wrong side of the bed this morning. In any case, I couldn’t coax a smile out of him.

Maybe he and Mrs Cardinal had a fight. You’re right though, he doesn’t look happy.
Beautiful shots! I once saw one somewhere near Newhaven in New England, it was lovely to see this bird as we do not have them here in Ireland.
You continually take fantastic shots. I wish I had had your camera last Sunday when driving home from Church. Right at the woods be hind the Thompson Center in Kingstowne right past the High Tension wires. Sitting in the tree was a huge white-ish shape. We turned around and drove in to get a better look.
I didn’t have any binoculars but the bird was huge. I’m pretty sure it was a large Horned Owl. We tried to get out of the car quietly but about the time we located it in the trees, it took off. It has an enormous wing span. It dropped down from the tree and glided up the way toward Manchester Blvd. What a sight.
Thanks, Sally. I would love to be able to spot a Great Horned Owl. I know that they are present in our area, though, like most owls, they are remarkably elusive.
Decidedly grumpy look, well done Mike
Ooh he does look a bit intense in that first shot!
One is sorely tempted to speculate on possible grounds for grumpiness, but perhaps it’s best to let sleeping birds lie…
Nice shots! He looks like he’s had plenty to eat so maybe it was just a touch of indigestion.
Thanks, Allen. I think the head-on angle makes the look seem especially “angry.” I love imputing human emotions on the creatures I see, though I doubt that they are usually accurate.
I know why the cardinal is upset, his team lost to the Cubs in last year’s playoffs. 😀
Now if I could only get a shot of a happy cub. 🙂
