Some of my favorite photos are ones with a common subject and a simple composition, like these shots I took this past weekend of a male Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) at Huntley Meadows Park. The blackbird was perched in a field of cattails and the morning light was beautiful.
Sometimes photography seems so uncomplicated—it just works.

The second photo’s my fav. I could just hear my mother saying, “Don’t put your feet on the table.” Birds don’t have such concerns.
Those are absolutely stunning images. Perfect. I still find it magical every time I see one of these red winged blackbirds.
Excellent images!
Amazing photos Mike, one question; Do these colourful blackbirds also sing so nice?
Those are great shots. Whenever I see a cattail I think of redwing blackbirds. It’ll be a while before we see them though. It’s supposed to drop to -12 F this weekend.
