The snow is melting quickly and soon will be nothing but a memory. Fortunately I was able to capture some fun shots when the snow covered my marshland park, like this image of an American Robin (Turdus migratorius) enjoying an undoubtedly frozen berry—I think it is a rose hip from a Swamp Rose.

Lovely image!
I wonder if they swallow them whole or if they pick out the seeds.
I am not sure, but it looked to me like they chewed on them and swallowed the entire fruit.
That is a fantastic shot.
Really nice shot, Mike. I’m sure the robins are consuming whatever is left to eat at this time of year. Their gut is pretty good at separating indigestible seeds from digestible fruit flesh. So when they eat whole berries, the indigestible stuff passes through and out the gut very quickly.
Great shot! Love the reds of the berries and his breast against the new-fallen snow!
Really great shot, Michael!
Oh that’s charming 🙂
Ours are already on the ground and scanning it with very hopeful eyes, as we had our first day that reached 70 today. I’m afraid it will be several weeks, though before their beloved worms offer themselves up.
Hello Michael,
I’ve just joined your blog and find it fascinating. I write about wild roses for various journals (non-profit) and found this photo of yours of American Robin in snow eating Rosa palustris hips I’d like to have published with my article on H.D. Thoreau and Rosa palustris in an English publication called Heritage Rose Journal. I will mail you a copy when it comes out sometime in December or early January, 2023. Will need an address. Also permission to use your photo.
