The skies finally cleared a little and yesterday evening I had a chance to take a walk in the Grand-Place, Brussel’s central square, one of my favorite locations in this city. The cobblestone pavement was still wet, helping to create nice reflections in some of the shots and the crowds were somewhat sparse, so I was able to get relatively unobstructed shots of some of the buildings that surround the square..
As is usually the case when I am traveling for work, I used my old Canon A620 point-and-shoot camera and used a variety of railings, posts, and other objects to steady myself for these nighttime photos.

These came out quite good. As I find out at our pumpkin festival each year, night photography isn’t easy.
I remember well your photos this past two year of the amazing carved pumpkins. Shooting in the dark, especially if you use available light is a big challenge. I’m always happy when I can get photos that are relatively sharp (my standard is lower than normal for night shots).
Brilliant night photos and I love the reflections in the wet cobbles.
Thanks, Marie. Taking shots at night is always a bit of an experiment for me–I never quite know for sure in advance how they will turn out, especially with relatively long exposures. The reflections were a nice bonus for me in some of these photos.
I recall this magnificent square when I was traveling in Brussels many, many years ago. These beautiful nighttime photos really show off its historic splendor!
