I don’t know where they have been hiding, but for several months this summer I hadn’t seen a single woodpecker at my local marsh. Consequently, I was really happy when I sighted this Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) right in front of me this past weekend. Downy Woodpeckers are small, but they make up for what they lack in size with an amazing amount of energy—they never seem to stand still.

Nice capture, I missed two opportunities this year and both right out side my own house doh!
Thanks. I am nearing the time of the year when I will be shift from my macro lens to a telephoto lens as the one with which I walk about, so you don’t be surprised if you see a lot more bird photos in the upcoming months.
I know what you mean. In the last week or so we’ve seen a lot more woodpeckers in central Ohio.
It’s great when you can find things right in front of you. I haven’t seen one of these in a long time.
I can’t tell if they are around all the time or not, because the leaves on the trees hide them from sight and may muffle the sound of their activity. Alternatively, they may spend their summers deeper in the woods. It’s always nice to stumble upon photogenic subjects vice having to stalk them.
I can’t remember seeing a single woodpecker all summer but I’ve seen plenty of evidence that they’re active here.
They are like owls for me, I have a hard time pickin them out, and then boom there they are…I know they have been there all along.
