Memories of this past winter’s unusually heavy snowfall are beginning to fade, but were revived when I saw these beautiful little Snowflakes during a recent visit to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, VA.
There are two varieties of Snowflakes—the Spring Snowflake (Leucojum vernum) and the Summer Snowflake (Leucojum aestivum)—and I am not absolutely certain which variety I photographed.
I love the simple beauty of this delicate flower and am happy that I was able to isolate a couple of the blooms to showcase that beauty.

I’ve never seen this one. Unusual with the green on its petals. Nice macros!
Thanks, Allen. I tend to confuse Snowdrops (which I think have no green) with Snowflakes (which are a little more bell-shaped). In both cases, I like simple, white flowers.
Great macros, interesting pattern on the petals..:-)
What beautiful little flowers. Your macro shots are wonderful, Mike.
Thanks, Judy. Although I photograph birds now pretty often, my macro lens is my lens of choice during much of the spring and summer.
Beautiful shots, Mike! It looks like a spring snowflake (L. vernum) because the summer snowflake grows in an umbel of 3-7 and the flowers are smaller.
Thanks, Camilla, for your kind words and your help on identification. Up until a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t even know what an “umbel” was, until a friend used the word and I looked it up.
We just some more snow so we don’t flowers to remind us:)
I checked out the weather report for Saskatchewan and say that you had a pretty good accumulation of snow. When does the risk of snow finally disappear? July?
It was 63F today so the weather is turning though the forecast still calls for snow next Monday. April can have melting and thawing but usually May is free of snow though I do remember two crazy extremes. My cousin got up on her May 31 wedding day to find snow. And one year it was so dry and warm we were horse back riding at the end of February.
I thought your title was in reference to the weather — and was appropriate for the weather in MN today which was snow mixed with rain. But I like the flower much better than our weather. Nice macros!
Thanks, Sue. I hope the snow is already gone–we have been having some pretty heavy rain here, with the possibility of more later in the week.
How clever to get the leaf frame
The framing was mostly good fortune. I was trying get an unobstructed shot of a single window and it sort of just happened. I was both surprised and pleases, especially because the part of the “frame” are at different distances from the lens.
