I hoped to get a shout of the lunar eclipse “blood moon” on Monday but it was too cloudy.
I missed it too, though it was mostly because I forgot about it and didn’t make the effort–I can’t remember if I was cloud-covered or not, but we had a significant amount of rain early in the week.
Same here, no views in the Bay Area of CA. This is a nice clear shot with good details. How did you set up your camera?
I have tried to photograph the moon on numerous occasions, Sue, and have learned that it is best to go totally manual and to really underexpose the image. For this shot, I had my camera set for ISO125, f/9, 1/250 sec, and 275mm and focused manually. The one constant in this setup is the shutter speed. I figure with an image-stabilized lens, I can be pretty confident in being able to handhold it at 1/250, even at 300mm. I drop the ISO as low as I can to try to get as clean an image as I can and then I adjust the aperture after I take a few shots. What I was not able to capture was the corona that surrounded the moon (I think that’s what it is called), but I was more interested in trying to capture some of the details of the moon’s surface.
There is a special kind of beauty from the moon.
The moon was beautiful enough that I felt compelled to rush out of the house to get some shots, heedless of the fact that the flip-flops that I had on my feet provided little warmth on an early morning when the temperature was right around the freezing level. Clear, cold mornings seem to make the details of the moon stand out even more than normal.
