Usually I spot male Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) perched on the top of the cattails stalks, loudly calling out, but this one decided to perch himself sidewards. It looked a little awkward, but he seemed to manage well enough as he struck a pose for me.

Great shot, I like trying to photgraph them when there are high winds and they are just swaying and have a death grip on the reeds..:-)
The pose makes for a more interesting shot.
It doesn’t look like his epaulet color is quite as well developed as it would be in a breeding male. Are they singing yet?
They are definitely singing out the traditional calls.
Is the title of your post a thinly-veiled reference to the song, “You Keep Me Hanging On” by The Supremes?
Indeed, it is a very thinly veiled reference to the music of my childhood.
Whether by the Supremes or Vanilla Fudge, a great song. I haven’t seen any red wings here yet but I wouldn’t think it would be much longer. That’s an excellent shot.
Nice shot, Mike! Extra nice with the strange pose 🙂
Thanks, Camilla. I was happy to be able to capture a pretty good amount of detail in the shot. Sometimes it seems that the blackness of the bird’s body confuses my camera and the focus is not sharp.
