Yesterday’s cloudy, rainy, foggy day made it a little tough to take photos, but I like the effect it had on the landscape, creating almost monochromatic scenes of different shades of gray. This is an unfamiliar style of shooting for me, so I played around a bit, trying to capture both a wide view of the marsh, and some close-views of isolated areas.
The snow here is gone now, but the ice is still hanging on.

That’s just what it looks like here today. I love trying to get photos of different types of weather. These illustrate a foggy day beautifully-I could almost feel the mist on my face.
Are those ducks on that ice?
I think that those are mostly Canada Geese, though there may be a few ducks there too. I was worried that I would not be able to adequately capture the feel of the fog and the mist, but it sounds like it worked out pretty well.
Beautiful icescape Mike!
Our ice is gone too. I could almost see an eagle perched in a tree, looking for easy prey.
I like that reflection and tone in the first photo. Winter can be really monochromatic and boring (from the photographic viewpoint). It’s good to see someone celebrate it instead of avoiding it.
It’s a little easier for me to celebrate it, given that it’s a rarity for me. If I had endless days of snow and ice, I might view it differently.
Lovely photos, Mike. And thanks for your comment on my blog!
That first shot is a wonderful landscape, Mike, and in my opinion you did the right thing in going for the wider picture for a change. I’m glad you didn’t darken the shadows to bring more clarity to them–it works really well this way. I love it when nature gives us natural monochromes. One has to look very closely to see the pale hint of color here. Great stuff!
Thanks for the encouragement and the comments, Gary. It was tough enough to try to capture the scene, but I was challenged even more when in trying to figure out how to deal with the images in post processing. In the end, I made fairly minimal changes.
