Finally I am starting to see some of the Yellow Garden Orbweaver spiders (Argiope aurantia) that fascinated me so much last summer. These spiders are big and colorful and have awesome webs with a distinctive zigzag section. I will be keeping an eye on the spiders to see if I can observe them catching prey and wrapping it up in silk.
Stay tuned for more spiders., most likely coming pretty soon to the blog—this spider is just the first fall installment.

Big, bad and beautiful! I would say colourful but that didn’t fit.
I probably should have used an alliterative “big, bad, bold, and beautiful.” Colorful or colourful? It all depends on you.
Or it depends on Canadian or American spelling …
…which also depends on “u”
These must certainly be among our most impressive spiders. I haven’t seen them here in Omaha, but we have other large orb-weavers–none of which have yet made an appearance. Looking forward to more of yours, Mike!
Thanks, Gary. It seems that spiders are really busy at this time of the year. I am hoping to get some nice shots of webs, but for some reason the spiders don’t seem quite as numerous as last year.
Great photo of a fascinating spider!
Thanks. Spiders and webs intrigue me, though I realize that many of my friends find them to be creepy.
I hope you see the same one I saw in the woods last week. It was BIG and had two white dots on its abdomen. I think it’s probably headed to bug guide, because I haven’t been able to ID it.
these are so pretty but if i saw one in my house i would….die.
Ooh, have I got a spider for you…I’ll have to find a way to forward it, a gigantic orb weaver you would love!
