Unlike most of the tree frogs that I have encountered, this Green Treefrog (Hyla cinerea) was alert and moved about a bit when I tried to take its photo—the others were resting motionless on cattail plants and seemed half-asleep.
The frog initially hid behind the cattail leaf and then tentatively poked its head out, giving me the chance to get this shot. I really like the pose that I was able to capture and the really cool details that you can see of the pads on its toes, which help it to seemingly defy gravity. I too would love to be able to defy gravity.

Amazing capture!
Neat pose, look at those cool toes! I bet your super macro lens can capture all the ridges of those big suction disc toes. You rarely get to see the underside of the toes in free-living animals.
The frog held this pose for only a brief moment, so I could only get the detail that you see, even with my new macro. I am totally intrigued by those toes and was reading about how they work with mucous in between the cells of the feet.
That’s an excellent photo! I’m always amazed by how far those little guys can jump. Now I have You Keep Me Hanging On by Vanilla Fudge playing in my head.
Thanks. You caught the musical reference right away, though I was thinking of the Supremes version.
Beautiful. What a great stare. I’m thinking there must a song that fits this post (especially the hanging on part) but it seems like it’s just past the edge of my memory. You seem to always find the songs for my posts so maybe it will come to you.
Thanks, Lyle. The title was intended to be a reference to the 1966 song by the Supremes (You Keep Me Hangin’ On) and the final part of the post was a reference to the signature song (Defying Gravity) of the Stephen Schwartz musical “Wicked.” I suppose there are lots of other songs that fit too, but those were the ones that I was thinking about when I wrote the post.
Of course, now I remember the first one.
Diana Ross would be proud to be referenced in this supreme photo. What a wonderful bit of evolution is the development that enables them to hang on to things so effectively without hooks or claws!
I am somewhat musically inclined and love to sing, so it’s very natural for me to make references to songs. It’s a fun way to implant a mental sound track with an image that I am posting.
