As I was getting ready to leave the marsh on Monday, I noticed this Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) on the other side of the beaver pond.
He did not appear to be fishing, but was perched on a fallen tree, seemingly seeking shelter from the falling rain. He was hunched over a little, like he was trying to retain body heat.
It’s not often that I see a blue heron completely out of the water (assuming I don’t count all of the times when they were flying away from me), so I was happy to get this shot.

These are wonderful majestic birds, and large enough to have real character! Great shot!
Thanks. I try to get shots of the blue herons whenever I have the chance and am so fascinated by their behavior that I enjoy watching them for extended period of time.
It is unique and interesting, what a beautiful bird. Whenever I see one along the water I believe them to be a sign of good luck.
I like that thought, Charlie, that the herons are a sign of good luck.
Great shot. I like that hunched look. Good thing you didn’t leave sooner.
Because of the rain, I was carrying only my camera with a mid-range zoom (55-250mm) and an umbrella. I stopped shooting when I did, because my battery gave out. Note to self–carry an extra battery even if not carrying the camera bag.
That’s a beautiful shot of one of my favorite birds.
