Its wings are a bit tattered and its colors have faded, but this male Slaty Skimmer dragonfly (Libellula incesta) was still hanging in there at the end of September, when I spotted it at Jackson Miles Wetland Refuge at nearby Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The nights have become considerably cooler the past week and I am anxious to get out in the wild with my camera to see which hardy surviving dragonflies are still flying.

How cold? I’ll bet we’ve got you beat!
For us, it considered cold when the temperatures dip down at night into the 40’s. 🙂
That is cool weather. I just looked at our forecast, and there’s a freeze watch tonight and tomorrow. But back in September, we had three frosts in a row. Spotty damage but cold overall. After that, it felt like summer again. I think all the katydids and tree crickets are done for now.
End of a season for sure. I know you’ll miss these beauties. Do they migrate?
