Liaison dangereuse? Living life on the edge? That’s how I would characterize these mating Big Bluet damselflies (Enallagma durum) that I spotted on Monday at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Neither of them was harmed during their “activity,” though those thorns look really menacing.
It is definitely not what I would call “safe sex.”

Hilarious! A heart between two thorns? Nigel commented its a prickly situation.
There are so many possibilities for off-color jokes, puns, and word plays. 🙂
Well, Mr. Mike, editing this short post for Benjamin was “dangereuse”. The last sentence was entirely omitted! Then Benjamin closely examined the enlarged photo with his nose almost touching the screen. I sat silently waiting for the question that I thought would surely follow. With his index finger placed upon the screen, he turned to me and said : “Look Gem, they made an upside down heart! Isn’t that awesome?” Whew, it is indeed!! Thank-you Mr. Mike!!
I suspected that you would have to censor some of the language of the posting, which was R-rated. I am happy to hear that Benjamin noticed the heart shape that the two damselflies formed. Once again I am thrilled at his attention to details. Fortunately you did not have to deal with the, “What are they doing?” question. 🙂
There was a similar situation with our Lily Bob-Tail and some other squirrels displaying what Benjamin called “roughhousing”. Some of the positions were obvious to me, but to Benjamin appeared as playful. Might I add, it was from this “activity” that I determined that Lily is indeed a “shemale”! “The Talk” falls under parental duties, thankfully not a Gem’s!!
I am in favor of that distribution of responsibilities. 🙂
I hadn’t seen the heart til I read your comment. Good going Benjamin! I was too focused on the thorns and thinking Ouch! 🙂
The famed Madame Alexander, founder of a magnificent doll company, once said : “Love is in the details.” To Benjamin, everything is in the details!
A great quote and very true. When writing a book, details are very important but ask Colin who was the more detail oriented one. LOL! 🙂
Lovely photo Mike!
Yikes – “you couldn’t spring for a hotel?”
🙂
The thorns do look vicious. I saw what I think was a tiny dragonfly in our garden. I instantly thought of you.
