When I spotted this turtle from a distance earlier this week at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, it was so elevated that I thought it was standing on a log or a rock. It was only when I zoomed in on this Eastern Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta picta) that I realized that it was standing on the back of another turtle. Yikes!
You have to be pretty old—probably about my age—if you remember the song whose name I used as the title for this blog posting. No, it was not sung by The Turtles.

Paul Revere and the Raiders on their 1966 Midnight Ride album. Or, were you a Monkees fan? This turtle seems to be looking for something or someone! Great capture! Thank-you, Mr. Mike!
My older sister was the real Monkees fan, so that was the version that I remember best. 🙂
With the reflection it looks quite a pile-up of turtles and how could I help but be reminded of the Dr Seuss story of Yertle the Turtle
I too thought of Doctor Seuss, but decided to take the posting in a different direction. I love the whimsical prose/poetry and the images of the Dr Seuss stories.
Great picture Mike; makes you wonder why the one on the bottom puts up with it. My (I’m not your) Stepping Stone vintage is the Sex Pistols, which I still listen to a bit
When there is a song that has been sung by a number of different groups, it’s interesting to see who remembers which version. I have seen turtles leaning on each other before, but this was a new twist for me. Maybe the bottom turtle does not even feel the weight because of the structure of the hard shell.
I remember hearing the Monkees version on the radio every day for quite a long time!
Great capture and musical reference, Mike. And I’m pretty sure we aren’t old -:)
The first thing that came to my mind was the assortment of myths about the turtle that carries the world on its back. There’s an interesting short post about it here. I’ve ony seen the turtle on turtle stack in art — this is the first time I’ve seen a photo of the real thing!
Not only do I remember the song, it’s currently stuck in my head 🙂
That back leg is stretched about as far as it could possibly go!
Maybe its a form of turtle yoga.
